TODAY THE EARTH WILL TILT TOWARDS THE SUN…
At approximately 22:34 GMT this evening Monday 20th June 2016 the earth will complete its tilt of 23.4 degrees towards the sun. This will give us the longest or shortest day, depending on where we find ourself on the globe.

In the northern hemisphere all those locations above the equator will see the sun reaching its zenith, the highest position in the sky.

This morning the sun rose at 4.43 GMT and sunset will occur at 21:21 GMT, making the length of this day 16 hours 38 minutes 23 seconds.
In the Southern Hemisphere all those locations below the equator will see the sun reaching its lowest position in the sky. This will also signal the shortest day of the year.
In the following days after the solstice, the further away you are from the equator the more extreme the weather will become. Sunlight each day will also increase of decrease.
NAMES FOR THE JUNE TILT
The word ‘Solstice’ is a Latin word meaning ‘sun stands still’. This refers to the position of the sun, which appears to hold the same spot in the sky for the few days before and after the actual day of the tilt.
Dogon High Priest
The Dogon of Mali referr to the ‘Solstice‘ as ‘The Sun of The North‘. This refers to the sun reaching its zenith during the course of the earth-sun-cycle.
Others refer to the June tilt as the ‘Sunturn‘ referring to the reversal of sunlight which occurs progressively until we reach the December solstice, when we experience the shortest day and there after, the light returns and the sun is said to be reborn.

Today is an extra special June Solstice, Why? For the first time since 1967 the Summer Solstice will coincide with the Strawberry Full Moon. As the sun sets below the horizon, the moon will become visible and thereby extend the light in the heavens into the night. Cloud cover permitting we may see the Moon glowing a warm amber.
